Hydration has become a much-discussed topic in recent years. There are a wealth of companies focussed on developing wearables, apps and other smart-tech for the health and fitness markets and to optimise athletic performance. However, after witnessing the consequences of dehydration in the elderly, I’ve become obsessed with developing a product to help reduce this risk and improve well-being in this often under-served group.
It’s been a convoluted path to this mission…. but here’s a potted history of what has brought me to this point;
After 10 years spent in Financial Services and later, Sales and Marketing for the BMW Group, I bowed out of the corporate world to pursue a long-standing love of property renovation and management. I soon discovered that one of the benefits of ducking the 9-5 (or, let’s face it - the 8 - whenever!) was that I could manage my time more efficiently allowing me to pursue other interests. That led me to embark on a degree with the Open University. They offer an 'Open' degree which allows the students to study any subjects in any combination to accumulate the points towards a degree. It's great for people like me who are studying for interest and pleasure - it allows you to change direction and explore your passions. In the early days I studied Psychology, History, Sociology and IT. The latter eventually led to me focussing in on design and innovation, which in turn led to me developing a product to improve hydration in the elderly….. didn’t see that coming!
Now I’m taking that idea and making it a reality by collaborating with experts at Swansea University and the Welsh Government’s AgorIP organisation.
I still continue to work in property, where I am building a portfolio of high-quality buy-to-let properties across the UK and championing better landlord standards and improved tenant relationships. Happily, the nature of my property investment activity allows me plenty of time to work on my hydration project.
Outside of treating my tenants like royalty and obsessing over hydration monitoring, I love to walk (the Brecon Beacons are my giant back garden), ride horses and practise Tai Chi. I am obsessed with learning and studying new areas. At present I'm educating myself on the arts of expert Suduko, music theory and stable management...
